ST. JOHNSVILLE Competition with overseas companies has long been a challenge for St. Johnsville's Cellect Plastics, but it's only one of several challenges the business has faced over the last 10 years under the leadership of CEO Scott C. Smith.
And for Smith, challenges over the decade have been more like disasters.
It was a disaster unrelated to the company the April 20, 2010, explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil well and the oil spill that followed that prompted Smith to travel to the Gulf Coast and later to China to market OpFlex, a foam Smith was able to get into the Gulf of Mexico to sop up oil. Small Business Administration's 2008 Phoenix Award for Small Business Disaster Recovery, staying in business requires the ability to adapt and persevere.
When Smith became the company's sole owner in 2001, it carried $25 million in debt. The economic recession that settled in soon after resulted in a reduction in the company's line of credit, putting further pressure on operations and supplies.
But within the next three years, Smith sold off several assets, licensed some of its technology and paid off the company's debt. When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005, the petroleum based raw materials for Cellect's foam increased 60 percent in cost.
The next year, Cellect won designation as a regionally significant project, affording the company Empire Zone benefits just days before a massive flood inundated its factory.
The June 2006 flood "Comprar Gh Jintropin" caused an estimated $100 million in damage throughout the Mohawk Valley, about $10 million of it at Cellect's plant, situated a stone's throw "Anaboliset Aineet" from the Mohawk River.
With county, state and federal help, the company stayed in Oral Steroids Make You Hungry business and rebuilt, and was ready when opportunity presented itself last year.
It was in 2010 that the Milwaukee born entrepreneur realized his company could play an important role in the cleanup of the oil spill caused by the April 20 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon.
One of Cellect's products, a biodegradable foam, was being used as a cleaning product because it can hold onto biocides Comprar Gh Jintropin for four hours and kill bacteria and viruses.
In another form, it was also being used to remove oils, fuels, lubricants and other chemicals from lakes, streams and harbors.
Some of the company's foam products are turned into protective gear such as karate helmets and gloves, for yoga mats, and insulation for vehicles.
But when oil started slicking its way to the Gulf shorelines, scientists at Cellect made a variant of the product, expanding the tiny cells within the foam to see if it could absorb heavier materials.
They found it was able to absorb up to 32 times its own weight in heavy grade gear oil, and it could be rung out and used again 100 times or more.
Most foams are filled with tiny air pockets, or cells, which are isolated. Cellect's product has numerous cells but they are interconnected so water can pass through them. Due to the principle of polarity, however, the oils and other contaminants are trapped within the foam even as water flows Oral Turinabol 10mg through.
That makes the OpFlex even more valuable because other items absorb oil but release some of it too.
The foam can be used and re used by simply wringing it out or putting it in a centrifuge and collecting the oil and other contaminants.
Taking the time and spending the money to test and modify a product, Smith said, is an important facet of responding to the needs of the market.
Simple pads of OpFlex used as demonstration were modified into several products for specific uses, and now the Methenolone Enanthate Effects trademarked "Green Stuff" is marketed in booms that offer five times more surface area than commonly used booms.
The company turned it into mops; "pom poms" which, when weighted down, can gather sub surface oil and other contaminants; large sheets called "sweeps" which pick oily sheen off the surface of water; and mitts that are being sold to clean contaminants off horses and other animals.
"We now live in a day and age where no one wants to take any risk," Smith said. "I'll put my "Achat Anabolisant Belgique" money where my mouth is. I believe in creating American manufacturing jobs. It takes a lot to fund a company, to do a lot of research and development, and people just don't want to do it anymore."
Smith flew to Louisiana and Texas in the wake of the DeepWater Horizon spill and found a fisherman who took him out on Australian Levitra the water so he could try out the new green foam, get photos of it working, and try to meet the right people to get the product into the market.
There were dozens of people from various countries offering solutions, and after telling people at British Petroleum he wasn't crazy, he finally got an audience.
Not long afterwards, Smith was meeting a truckload of OpFlex bound for the Gulf of Mexico.
A few months later, an oil line broke in Dalian, China, and Smith was on a plane heading to the Orient to get OpFlex into the cleanup efforts there, too.
Despite needs in the United States, Smith said he's expecting more orders from OpFlex to come in from overseas.
